𧏠âCocoa Drops the Bombshell: Kaiâs DNA Report Isnât What Anthony Expected đ±â
The afternoon sun hung low over the city, painting the sky in streaks of gold and fire. Anthony sat in his car outside Cocoaâs house, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles went white. He had been waiting for this day for weeksâthe day the DNA results for little Kai would finally bring him peace.
For months, Anthony had been trapped between hope and fear. Everyone around him had a different story. Shayla swore up and down that he was Kaiâs father, while CocoaâShaylaâs cousin and the one person who never sugar-coated the truthâkept hinting that things werenât adding up.
Now Cocoa had called him and said, âAnthony⊠you might wanna come see me in person. Thereâs something you need to know about that test.â
His stomach had been in knots ever since.
The Arrival
When Anthony walked into Cocoaâs living room, she was sitting at the table with a single white envelope in front of her. She looked nervousâtoo nervous for someone who had always been tough as nails.
Anthonyâs voice trembled. âThatâs it? The DNA report?â
Cocoa nodded slowly. âYeah. It came this morning.â
He reached for it, but Cocoa placed her hand on top of the envelope. âBefore you open this⊠you need to be ready. Whatâs in here might change everything.â
Anthonyâs heart pounded. âIâve been ready since the day Shayla told me she was pregnant.â
Cocoa took a breath and slid the envelope toward him.
The Bombshell
Anthony tore the flap open, his hands shaking. He pulled out the paper, eyes darting straight to the results section.
Then he froze.
âProbability of paternity: 99.9%.â
He blinked, confused. âWait⊠what?â He looked up at Cocoa. âIt says I am the father. So whatâs the problem?â
Cocoa sighed, folding her arms. âKeep reading, Anthony.â
He scanned the page again. And then he saw itâanother section he hadnât noticed before.
âSecondary DNA match identified: maternal profile inconsistent with listed mother, Shayla Vaxter.â
Anthonyâs head snapped up. âWhat does that mean?â
Cocoaâs voice was steady but soft. âIt means Shaylaâs not Kaiâs biological mother.â
The room went silent.
Anthonyâs Shock
Anthonyâs world spun. âCocoa, that canât be right. Shayla gave birth to that babyâI was there!â
Cocoa nodded sadly. âI know. But look⊠the hospital records they used for comparison donât match her DNA. Something happened, Anthony. Either there was a switch, or someoneâs been lying.â
Anthony sank into the chair, the paper slipping from his hands. His mind replayed every momentâthe delivery, the late-night phone calls, the secrecy surrounding the hospital visit when Shayla claimed the baby had to stay in the NICU for a few days.
âAre you sayingâŠâ he whispered, âthat Kai might not even be hers?â
Cocoa swallowed hard. âThatâs what the report says. Youâre the biological father, but whoever Shayla really carriedâor whatever happened that nightâitâs not as simple as we thought.â
The Confrontation
Anthony stormed out of Cocoaâs house and drove straight to Shaylaâs apartment. She opened the door, smiling faintly. âHey baby, whatâs wrong? You lookââ
He cut her off, waving the papers. âDonât âhey babyâ me! What the hell is this, Shayla?!â
She froze, the color draining from her face. âWhere did youâhow did youââ
âCocoa gave it to me!â he shouted. âIt says Iâm the father, but it also says youâre not the mother! Whatâs going on, Shayla?!â
Tears welled in her eyes as she backed away. âAnthony, please⊠I was going to tell youââ
âTell me what?! That you faked a birth? That you switched babies? That Kai isnât even biologically yours?!â
Shayla broke down. âIt wasnât supposed to happen like this. The baby I delivered⊠he didnât make it, Anthony. The hospital made a mistake. They offered me a choice, and Iâ I couldnât lose everything. So I took the baby they gave me.â
Anthony stumbled back, shock flooding his veins. âYou stole someoneâs child?â
She sobbed, collapsing to the floor. âI just wanted to keep us together. You were so excited. I couldnât watch you fall apart.â
The Aftermath
Anthony left without another word. He drove until the road disappeared into the night, his mind spinning with disbelief. Kai was hisâby bloodâbut the truth behind Shaylaâs lie had shattered everything.
Back at Cocoaâs house, she watched from the window as Anthonyâs car vanished into the darkness. She whispered to herself, âThe truth always comes out⊠no matter how deep you bury it.â
And in that moment, somewhere out there, another family was asking the same question Anthony now had to face:
Whose baby is Kai really meant to be?
